Okay, I’m on the bandwagon, trust me. I’m not a fan of Sarah Palin either. I know that her views on abortion are archaic, as are her views on marriage, and well pretty much everything else. She’s a horrible governor that charged women for rape kits in hospitals, which further proves she’s got no issues with the system continuing to victimize the women who have suffered this despicable abuse. I get it. I’m totally there. She sucks.

But, what the fuck, feminists? How can you stand by, and what’s worse, condone the sexist slandering that she’s suffering in the media, the blogosphere, and the entertainment industries. Songs that rap about raping Sarah Palin have been praised by feminists as giving her what she deserves! I say again, WHAT THE FUCK?!? How is raping anyone hailed by feminists? A demeaning attack that women have long been subjected to, through a morally bankrupt and unbalanced societal forced and nurtured sadistic power structure. And now, it’s okay as long as it happens to Sarah Palin, jokingly or in the context of entertainment? Come on.

The t-shirts that call Palin a cunt also being shown favor from feminists is bothersome to me as well. It’s the misogyny mantra being spouted about a women in power and the reduction of her role to a sexual one as well, and they’ve got feminists falling in step with their chauvinist shit! I know what it’s like to think that Sarah Palin is the worst political gamble this country has ever borne witness to, but that doesn’t excuse this behavior. It’s still not right, even though she’s that wrong!

I don’t think I’ve read a positive review of Twilight from a feminist yet. I wonder if I’m going to be the first?

As a feminist who both loves vampire romance and has read so many horrible things about this series, I just had to read it myself to see what all of the fuss was about. You may be shocked to hear that I really wasn’t offended by the book at all and I actually rather enjoyed it.

I should clarify that so far I’ve only read the first book so I don’t know where things are going but I have a theory that leads to a fairly feminist message in the end.

Bella starts off not exactly needy but not totally self-reliant either. I saw her grow a bit in this first book and I have a feeling that she will continue to grow over the next 3 as well. The thing I find very interesting is that many of the vampire’s “special powers” don’t work on her. Edward can’t read her mind and Jasper only seems to be able to effect her emotions when she allows it. This makes me think that once she becomes a vampire, her power will be that she is in complete control of herself, immune to the other vampire’s powers all together.

It’s hard to have an epic love story without the characters losing themselves in each other. And if you’ve ever experienced this kind of love you’ll know how wonderful it feels. And this book really took me back to being a teenager completely head over heels in love.

I’ll be the first to admit, as a teenager when I would fall head over heels like this, it usually wasn’t for the right type of guy. I have to say, my taste in men has improved to a staggering degree over the years. However, as someone who found this kind of epic love (I’ve been with my husband for 10 years and can’t imagine life without him), I have to wonder why it seems it’s automatically considered unfeminist to love someone that much. I kind of feel sorry for anyone who has never loved someone so much that it makes you ache when they aren’t around.

I’m kind of surprised at the degree of love/hate for this book, I would think there would be more like me who were on middle ground. It wasn’t the best book I’ve ever read but I did find it to be a fun and enjoyable read.

I was stumbling in the Linux/Unix category tonight and came across this little gem that I just had to share. When I first started reading it I thought it must be fairly old, someone talking about an early version of linux. Then I came to the part where they mentioned Vista and was just stunned. Funny stuff!!

from http://rixstep.com/1/1/20070724,00.shtml

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?
That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

All I can say after finishing this book is WOW! 3 chapters in I couldn’t put it down, I ended up reading it in 6 hours with just a few hours sleep somewhere in the middle. I couldn’t get enough and the more I read the more it sparked that fire to make a difference inside of me.

It starts fairly light and fun and even though you know it’s not going to stay that way, when the bomb finally does drop (no pun intended) you really don’t expect it. Emotionally it hit me a lot like I imagine it hit the kids.

I really thought when I read the description before starting the book that it would be less realistic, more like 1984 which I knew it to be based on. However, by chapter 5 I realized that this was a story that not only could happen in the US today but probably has. It takes us from the place we’re at now to where we could potentially be going very soon.

The description of what it’s like to write code at the end of chapter 7 was beautiful and encapsulated the feeling so well. My only complaint is that I would have liked to have seen more of Van and Jolu but at the same time completely understand the roles they play.

A highly recommended read!

I read when I first went on Prozac a few months back that one of it’s side effects could be nightmares. So I got into “hope for the best, expect the worst” mode and low and behold, the worst is starting. Well, not really I know things could be much worse, but I have been having quite a few nightmares lately and last night I had a full anxiety filled night. Last night’s wasn’t even actually a nightmare but I was in a social situation where I was having panic attack after panic attack. And after a night of that much anxiety and panic, I was really thrown off for whole day today. The full on nightmares I’ve had lately weren’t as bad as this was.

So today I was thinking about the fact that a side effect of Prozac is nightmares and I started to wonder why. I’m usually a very research oriented person, and I’m sure I’ll look into the actually scientific causes soon. But I developed my own -has no background in science at all- hypothesis. Maybe the drug can control the anxiety and panic in your conscious mind by controlling certain chemicals, etc, but the anxiety/depression still manifests itself in our subconscious. All of that panic and anxiety that is suppressed down all day finally has an outlet that it can get through at night, via our dreams.

And one of the real life nightmares that I’ve started experiencing (one that I didn’t even know was a side effect until it actually happened and I looked it up) is the inability to reach orgasm. I knew that it could suppress your sex drive but I hadn’t read anything before about it actually stopping the female orgasm all together. Luckily I haven’t experienced the lack of sex drive, it’s still the same and I still enjoy sex as much as before, I just can’t come. This little side effect (which I have to wonder why it only effects women) is actually making me think about cutting back on my dosage to see if I can still stay balanced while cutting back on the negative side effects some.

If anyone else has any experiences you’d like to share with this (or any other anti-depressant), feel free to do so. Also feel free to correct my faux hypothesis if you know the scientific reason for the nightmares.

I read it over the course of three and a half hours and just couldn’t get enough. Envy and pride are the driving forces behind our main characters. The need to be something, anything, other than what they are.

I don’t know, maybe it’s because I’ve felt this way for a lot of my life but I really identified with a lot of these characters (which at times could be a bit scary!).
